Principal Scientist - Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences

Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPS) enables drug discovery and drug product development through application of pharmaceutical science and drug delivery research from target identification through clinical candidate selection for both small and large molecules. DPS influences molecular design of these clinical candidates through physicochemical property profiling and application of insights to better understand and resolve drug product developability risks. We further utilize our expertise to identify and develop solid state phases, develop and study prototype formulations intended for clinical use, and deliver robust Good Laboratory Practice formulations. In aggregate our team enables the transition of the right molecules from discovery to clinical formulation development with clinical formulation strategies in place. DPS in West Point, PA is seeking a Principal Scientist (R5) to join our department. The role will report to the West Point DPS Director and will be expected to identify and champion impactful pipeline-driven innovations to solve unique Discovery program challenges across modalities. The candidate will be expected to inspire scientific rigor within the team and bring novel tools to aid in keeping DPS at the forefront of pharmaceutics assessment in Discovery. Development of subject matter experts and technical depth within the group will be accomplished through technical mentorship of scientists and teams on the design, execution, and documentation of experiments to evaluate the potential liabilities in novel chemical matter and to prototype standard and novel formulations to inform on downstream risks. The candidate should possess scientific knowledge and / or experience related to various aspects of drug product development (i.e. formulation and process development, biopharmaceutics, analytical methods, regulatory considerations, competitive landscape) with a drive to apply novel technologies while working at the laboratory bench. The successful candidate will be expected to work within DPS and across our Company to analyze, coordinate, plan, and lead teams to advance pipeline-driven novel drug delivery solutions. This position is expected to drive communications both verbally and through written documents and reports, to the local team, across functions, and external to our Company. The candidate should have a creative passion for identifying and applying effective drug delivery technologies and pharmaceutics methods as well as a track record of driving results and rapidly progressing from idea conception to in-vitro & in-vivo evaluation. Responsibilities:
Design and characterize novel therapeutics in the context of drug product development, formulations; Execute thorough developability assessments. Works closely with protein scientists, medicinal chemists and discovery teams throughout all stages of discovery to build key structure-property relationships across multiple drug modalities to identify optimal candidates for development Design enabling preclinical formulations (drug delivery) for pharmacology and toxicology studies Optimize preclinical drug candidates' solid state phase (pharmaceutics, stable polymorph ID, salt selection, etc.) Deliver key data sets for development candidate evaluation (Developability Assessment) for small molecules, peptides and biologics Identify new and impactful drug delivery and pharmaceutics technologies that enable the Company pipeline Provide leadership/mentorship for junior scientists in the laboratory Influence the direction of discovery teams in order to identify and progress optimal drug candidates of all modalities Must excel in a team environment, where they also will collaborate with development functions (preformulation, chemistry, formulation, analytical, and biopharmaceutics research) in order to prepare early data sets that can be translated to clinical formulation development and ultimately quality drug products. Expected to effectively present their work at team meetings as well as promoteour Company science through publications and presentations/lectures. The successful candidate must be able to balance their core laboratory research, team representation, and participation in key initiatives. Education Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D. with +6 years or M.S. with +8 years in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, chemical / biochemical engineering, or related disciplines. Required Experience and Skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Strong leadership/interpersonal skills and a motivation to work in a team environment with cross-functional interactions are essential. Familiarity with early development and commercialization challenges through relevant development experience Strong organizational and technical problem-solving abilities Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment Learning and growth mindset; willingness to explore and master new analytical techniques and formulation processes. Desired Experience and Skills Demonstrated experience solving program challenges by leveraging strong scientific fundamentals in related subject areas including organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biopharmaceutics, process development, and/or engineering. Candidates with experience in pre-clinical / clinical formulation development and physico-chemical characterization of small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, bioconjugation and/or biologics are preferred. Candidates with specific experience with drug delivery are also preferred, including design, preparation and analysis of lipid nanoparticle formulations, enabled oral solid dosage forms, and parenteral formulations.
